gpad completes prime King’s Cross workspace

Architectural practice gpad london ltd has just completed Crinan Street, a refurbished, reconfigured Victorian diamond workshop. This creates 7,545 sq.ft. of prime open plan office space spanning six floors including basement conversion and an addition storey boasting a private roof terrace. The project has been shortlisted in the 2018 AJ Retrofit Awards.

Victorian style and Italian design

With its Victorian Warehouse heritage, the original building was tired and outdated, with restricted access. Curved organza wall tiles imported from Italy create an impression when entering the building, with their undulating limestone surface lit to create a playful focal point.

The building is now much more accessible with a creative lift installation. It has a glass back panel exposing the weathered brick wall of the lift shaft giving users a visual connection to the building’s past when travelling through the building.

Incorporating a roof extension into the design has added further value to the clients’ investment in creating a desirable workspace at the prestigious corner site.”

High quality materials complete the project

A feature staircase with steel balustrade rods incorporate steel stringer and timber thread inserts. Recessed wall lights and an LED-lit handrail offer a practical yet design-led solution for illuminating the stairwell.

The ground and basement floors provide a unique self-contained office or showroom space with its own street level entrance.

While the four upper floors offer voluminous open plan office space with the top floor boasting a brand new extension and the added benefit of a new roof terrace.

All the office areas feature crisp white ceilings with raw brick walls, while exposed Victorian columns, painted black, really pay homage to the site’s industrial heritage. This contrasts with a high quality oak herringbone engineered timber floor adding a touch of period charm.
